How to tailgate a DC United soccer game?

Me and a group of my friends of about 8-12 are going to a DC United game in July. Can we just park in the lot and drink and eat openly at our parking space, or do we have to go to organized tailgating tents? Any other suggestions for making it an awesome tailgate?
