yes, you are running rich, your assumption is most likely correct, try checking your spark plugs and wires. most likely they are fouled out and are barely igniting the fuel. causing the unburnt fuel to build up in the exhaust, that problem has been occuring for some time if its all the way back at the muffler built up like that.
